Day 8

Good morning! Why don't you begin today with a P.E. session with Joe Wicks? He will be leading a 30 minute session on his YouTube channel. Click here (after checking with an adult) to watch it live at 9am or catch-up with it later.

Today you will be focussing on particular features of sentences. Many of us like to use simple sentences when writing; this needs to change as you are now in year 5. Today you will be reviewing features of a complex sentence. Remember, complex sentences have two clauses (two parts) which communicate thoughts and ideas. A complex sentence always has:

1.       main clause and

2.       a subordinate clause

Task 1

Look at the ‘Complex Sentence Posters yr 5’ (only up to slide 10) which we have uploaded. This tells you very clearly which part is the subordinate clause and which is the main clause. Read through each sentence to fully understand what makes a sentence a complex one. Tell your older brother or sister (or an adult) what you have found out.

Task 2

Use the ‘Spot the Complex sentence’ sheets to practise your skills; this will really help you develop your confidence when using complex sentences. Next, read your book (either the library book or any other book you have) to find a range of complex sentences that you can find. Copy out at least 10 different sentences that you like, in your exercise book. You could go the extra mile and circle the main clause in one colour and the subordinate clause in a different colour. Have fun!

By the end of the two tasks, you will have read and understood the posters about complex sentence. You will have also practised spotting complex sentences in the given sheets and in your reading book.

Task 1

Using the Internet, research and make notes of the different methods for multiplication e.g. Egyptian multiplication

Task 2

Watch the following video teaching you how to use the Gelosia (lattice) method for multiplication.

Complete the long multiplication worksheet. Can you use the Gelosia method?

Watch the following video reminding you how to use the short division method.

Complete the short division worksheet.

By the end of the two tasks, you will have made notes on the different methods of multiplication that you have researched, completed a worksheet on long multiplication and completed a worksheet on short division.

Topic- Food Technology

Task 1

Look at the images in the PowerPoint, most of these you should be able to find in your kitchen. Write down the name of each piece of equipment and state what they do.

Task 2

Watch the following episode of ‘MasterChef Junior’ you may choose to watch the full episode or you must watch to at least 18:00.

You are now going to design your own ‘knockout burger’!

Task 3

In your work book, plan your ‘knockout burger’ by researching…

·         different meats or vegetables to use as your burger

·         different bread buns

·         different sauces/condiments

What sides are going to accompany your burger? E.g. curly fries, carrot sticks or a salad

Task 4

Draw a well labelled burger showing all the tasty ingredients (use the image below as a guide).

Maybe you could show your family the end product and one day make your ‘knockout burger’!
